Budget Crisis Part 3: Facing the inevitable

After years of minimal tuition hikes, administrators see no way to avoid a large tuition increase

Setting tuition for Arizona's public universities the past few years has become as predictable as a square dance.

Students wait in line outside the Social Sciences building yesterday to see the new cast of the MTV show "Road Rules." The cast was on campus filming a "game show" that required the cast to test their knowledge of sexual education. Episodes for next season are being filmed at college campuses across the country.

  • There are more than 1,000 chemicals in a cup of coffee. Of these, only 26 have been tested, and half caused cancer in rats.
  • Food poisoning is the biggest fear among chefs who cook for world leaders. Some cook for as many as 5,500 guests at a time. Sudhir Sibal, a devoted world-class chef who serves India's prime minister, says he personally samples all food before it is served.
  • Of all the major brewing nations, England remains the only one in which ale is the primary beer consumed. This is in contrast to lager, which is the world's overall dominant type of beer.
  • Official FDA guidelines allow whole pepper to be sold with up to 1 percent of the volume made up of rodent droppings.
  • There are 17 recognized species of walnuts - all are edible. "Persians" are considered the most tasty.
