Spring fling organizers may get bonuses
ASUA passed a new incentive program last night that allows each of the nine directors of Spring Fling to earn monetary bonuses for their work.
A spokesperson for the committee said while bonuses have not been offered in previous years, Spring Fling is expecting to earn a large profit this year - somewhere in excess of $30,000.
If the profit exceeds that number, each of the directors will receive a $500 bonus in addition to their stipends.
Spring Fling, the largest student-run carnival in the nation, has lost money in previous years because of a lack of advertising and a change in location from the UA Mall to Rillito Downs near North First Avenue and East River Road.
All profits earned each year from the fair have been put into a "safety" account, in the event that Spring Fling has debts or needs to make large purchases.
Biologist nominated for service award
Roxie Catts, a molecular and cellular biology program specialist, has been nominated for the Charles S. "Bumps" Tribolet Associated Students of the University of Arizona Service Award. Tribolet worked as director of student affairs from 1960 to 1974.
ASUA president Ray Quintero spoke in favor of Catts receiving the nomination.
"I have known Roxie for two years," Quintero said last night. "She has always been a helpful influence both as an adviser and as co-chair of the (Academic Advising) Task Force."
Quintero continued by saying that Catts deserves the nomination because of her approach toward both student leadership and MCB students.
Women's center to host rape forum
As a follow-up to Women's History Month, the Women's Resource Center will be hosting a rape forum on April 11.
The forum, which will be held on the Mall, will play host to speakers from various organizations as well as UA President Peter Likins, who was unable to speak at last semester's event.
Among the highlights of the forum will be an opportunity for women to address health and safety issues and to record their thoughts on a Wall of Expression, similar to the one put up following the Sept. 11 attacks.
Interested students can contact the center for more information.
Spring concerts kick off friday
The anticipated spring band concerts promised by ASUA will kick off this Friday from 1 p.m. -3 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center.
The band Slapfish, whose members work at the Student Recreation Center, will play in the first installment Friday.
"There will be food and drinks, and it should be a great time for everyone who comes," said Sen. Scott Harris.
