Not too often is there a weekend in which a football article is the third-biggest story on campus without there even being a basketball game.
However, this weekend was not your ordinary weekend at the UA.
In what can be referred to as not only one of the windiest days that Tucson has seen in a long time - winds during the day reached 35 mph - Saturday could also have been one of the busiest.
Seven UA sports - including the men's rugby team - started within a couple hours of each other on Saturday, making it a nightmare for a Wildcat fan to catch all the action.
Plus, if you want to get technical, the Stanford and UA baseball game, which started Friday night, did not end until the wee hours of Saturday morning. This isn't even including catching the Gymcats and the women's golf team that both competed in Tempe.
So, how does one decide on which game, or in my case games, to attend?
One really can't, because odds are you were sure to miss something special. I made it to two games - football and baseball.
But what I'm going to do for you is try to sum up what happened Saturday in the rest of this column.
If you missed the football game, I can tell you that you missed quite a performance by both freshman tailbacks Mike Bell and Gainus Scott. Scott rushed for a game-high 71 yards and a touchdown, and Bell finished the afternoon with 53 yards. Plus you missed free food before the game.
If you missed the track meet, you missed Brianna Glenn win the 100m sprint and the long jump. Glenn has quietly become one of the best athletes in Arizona history.
If you missed the softball game, you missed another classic battle between the Bruins and the Wildcats. Anytime the No. 1 and No. 2 teams meet, it is quite an event. This game was no disappointment. Freshman Lovieanne Jung hit a solo homerun that turned out to be the game winner.
If you missed the baseball game Saturday, I can tell you that you didn't miss much. It was a19-1 loss coming hours after the Wildcats lost in 18 innings Friday night in 5 hours 19 minutes. The team that played Saturday was not the same team that used every ounce of effort to try to upset the No. 2 team in the nation.
If you missed the women's tennis match you missed something the team hasn't done all year win two consecutive Pac-10 matches.
The Wildcats upset No. 18 Washington on Friday and No. 28 Washington State Saturday. Looks like first-year coach Vicky Maes is getting her team going in the right direction.
If you couldn't make it out to Tucson National this weekend you missed Chris Nallen post the 10th best score in the history of the men's golf program. Nallen finished second overall, shooting a 10-under-par.
If you missed the men's rugby match at Estevan Park, you missed one of the most dominating performances of the weekend. The rugby team won by a score of 77-12 against Idaho State.
So, overall, the day went off without a hitch, with the UA teams or individuals finishing fairly well in each sport. However, hopefully in the future something like this won't happen again, because it made for one wild day in Tucson.
