Undeclared freshman Dianne Hollands parks her bike among dozens of others yesterday morning outside the Modern Languages building. Parking and Transportation Services is strongly recommending that students take their bikes with them when they leave at the end of the semester to ensure that their bikes will be safe during the summer.

Students who leave their bicycles on campus over the summer may not find them when they get back.
Bicycles left on campus during the summer are at an increased risk of being stolen, being vandalized or being impounded by Parking and Transportation Services.
The bikes PTS does not have information on could be impounded after May 13. PTS will impound all bikes parked outside residence halls over the summer.
Bikes can be stolen along with their tires and seats, said Elaine Bastardo, PTS alternative transportation office specialist.
ãGetting your bike impounded is almost as bad as getting it stolen, only you can get it back,ä said Sarah Parton, an anthropology and dance senior. ãIt is only slightly less annoying.ä
Students have the option of storing their bikes somewhere off campus or in one of PTSâ bike enclosures in the Main Gate Garage, 815 E. Second St., and the Tyndall Avenue Garage, 880 E. Tyndall Ave.
There is a $15 storage fee for the summer , from May 13 to August 27. Anyone interested should call 626-RIDE.
PTS is not responsible for bikes unless they are in the enclosures. A specific number of people are assigned to each enclosure, and they have to lock up their bikes with the security cables and locks included.
Those who lock their bikes inside the enclosures will get a code for entering, Bastardo said.
While PTS cannot guarantee the protection of the bikes not locked inside the enclosures, PTS officers work year round patrolling bike racks to reduce theft.
ãIf you have to leave your bike on campus over the summer, contact us,ä Bastardo said. ãWhile it is hard for us to track bikes in the summer, we have a list for people to sign up,ä she said.
Graduating seniors can donate their bikes to PTS to lease to departments or organizations or donate them directly to the department they feel is in need, Bastardo said.
