Pacific 10 Conference reschedules Wildcats' matches against Cal, Stanford

The UA women's volleyball team's matches against Stanford and California, originally scheduled for Sept. 14 and 15 and postponed because of the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C.. have been rescheduled.

The matches will now take place Oct. 7 and 8, two days after a contest with in-state rival Arizona State.

The rescheduling of the matches was considered imperative by many of the coaches and athletic directors in the Pacific 10 Conference because Stanford and Arizona are considered to be the top teams in the conference. Had they not found a new date, it would have meant that the two teams would only face each other once this season, while the other teams in the Pac-10 would have to face each teams twice.

Four UA tennis players head to tournament

Two men and two women from UA's tennis teams will travel to San Diego, Calif., this weekend to participate in the third annual World Team Tennis National Collegiate Tennis Championships at the George Barnes Tennis Center near Point Loma.

Steven Capriati and Carl Hagman will represent the men, and Maja Mlakar and Marie-Pier Pouliot will be the ladies' entrants.

The tournament, which begins Friday, will feature four players from Alabama, Brigham Young, Fresno State, Loyola Marymount, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma State, Princeton, San Diego, San Diego State, South Alabama, SMU, Texas A&M, TCU and Winthrop.

The event - created by former tennis star Billie Jean King - will feature an unconventional playing and scoring system. Each match will consist of five sets, with one set each of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Each game won will result in a point, and each set will be played to five points.

Arizona's first match will be against host team San Diego State.

Four women's basketball games to be broadcast nationally

The UA women's basketball team will be featured on national television at least four times this season, the Pacific 10 Conference announced yesterday.

The first televised games will be Nov. 21, when the Wildcats play host to Ohio State.

The Pac-10 schedule features 21 contests televised nationally on Fox Sports Net - two more than last season - including 16 conference match-ups. Additional games may be added to the network by the institution.

The 18 regular-season telecasts will culminate with live coverage of the first Pac-10 Women's Basketball Tournament, which will be played March 1-4 on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Ore.
