UA campus to compete against ASU in blood drive

Competition begins in less than two weeks

The UA will compete against ASU in an upcoming five-day blood donation drive, where blood will be collected across campus, ASUA senators said at last night's meeting.

For the last two years, Arizona State University has won the blood donation competition between the two universities. But this could be the year the University of Arizona takes the title back, said Sam Chang, executive vice president of the Associated Students of the University of Arizona.

Last year, the UA campus community donated 1,500 pints of blood, in residence halls and locations all over campus, Chang said. This year the blood drive will be at Bear Down Gym Oct. 15 to 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and at various other locations around campus that are yet to be announced.

ASUA also reported that a majority of students surveyed support extending the boundaries of ASUA Saferide - the student government's nightly transportation escort service - from East 10th Street to East Broadway Boulevard.

More than 80 percent of 400 UA students surveyed said they would like the Saferide boundaries extended. Fifty-five percent of those surveyed said they would use the service more if the boundaries were extended.

"By extending the boundaries, we will be able to better serve the needs of our student population," said Craig Haubrich, ASUA Saferide director.

Saferide has given 1,495 rides during September, Haubrich said.

ASUA meetings are open to the public. The next ASUA meeting is Wednesday at 6 p.m., in the Modern Languages building, room 411.
