Fast facts: In old Japanese theaters, salt was sprinkled on the stage before each performance to prevent evil spirits from casting a spell on the actors and ruining the play. In Pacific Grove, Calif., it's a misdemeanor to kill a butterfly. In 17th-century Massachusetts, smoking was legal only at a distance of five miles from any town. On this date: In 1865, John Wesley Hyatt patented the billiard ball. Hyatt won $10,000 in a contest as the first person to invent a substitute for the commonly used ivory ball. In 1886, Griswold Lorillard wore a tailless dress coat to the Tuxedo Club in New York City. Named after the club, the tuxedo replaced the commonly worn tailcoat. In 1928, the phrase, "You're the cream in my coffee," was first used in the long-running Broadway show, "Hold Everything." In 1933, the first synthetic detergent, Dreft, went on sale in the United States. In 1965, Snoopy's Red Baron character made its first appearance in the Peanuts comic strip.
