The K.G.B.
(DreamWorks)
By now, all of the people who loved the Backstreet Boys in their prime have gotten older, and their musical palettes have gotten a little more sophisticated. Maybe now they want punk rock appeal, hip album art and guys who play their own instruments. Chances are they've been feeling pretty blue for the past little while, listening to that Millennium album over and over, just wanting something more.
Thank the blue, blue heavens for the California band K.G.B. - three pretty boys and a portly guitar player who also plays something called a "fun machine." If you like the Backstreet Boys and you have Attention Deficit Disorder, the K.G.B. was put on Earth for you. They help out the distracted listener by repeating their name an uncountable number of times throughout the album. At one point they even list off the kooky made-up names of every member in the band with kooky voice effects. Maybe that's what the fun machine does.
The last song is kind of a wind-down, softer and slower than the others. It stops for oh, five minutes, and just makes funny, quiet synthesized sounds - you know, for the art crowd (ADD-afflicted listeners might want to program this one out).
The album isn't all bad; it's kind of kicky and fun, and there are lots of horns. Who doesn't love horns?
If you're really dedicated to making fun of the Backstreet Boys, but you've been doing it for a while and you want to make fun of something a little more grown-up, you might try giving the K.G.B. a swing, even if you don't have ADD.
