The UA baseball team's first real action of the season was against familiar opponents - themselves.
The 31-player roster was divided into two different squads for two seven-inning games Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, Team White scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off sophomore pitcher Sean Rierson.
Senior catcher Chris Cunningham singled in two runs off the right-hander in the inning.
"It was the first day of intersquad (games), and I was a little too fancy at first," Rierson said.
Rierson settled down and struck out the side in the second inning, adding another in the third. The Phoenix native gave up three runs on three hits in three innings of work while notching four strikeouts.
For Team Gray, junior catcher Ken Riley and sophomore center fielder Clarence Farmer both went 2-for-3 with a single and double.
The highlight of the game was a full-extension diving catch by senior right fielder Clayton Bried in foul territory to end the fourth inning.
"That's a great play, (especially) to get in our minds that we can make those types of plays," Rierson said.
Saturday, Riley, for Team White, doubled in two runs off sophomore pitcher Scott Burns.
Freshman first baseman Ryan Wilmer and sophomore second baseman Greg Powers each followed with an RBI single to close out the fourth inning.
Freshman left fielder Jeff Van Houten's RBI single in the top of the fourth provided the lone run for Team Gray.
The Wildcat defense looked sharp throughout the game. Senior shortstop Brad Hassey speared a searing line drive to his left in the fifth inning to rob freshman right fielder Chris Marini of a hit.
"We take a lot of pride in our defense - it will be our strongest point this season," Riley said.
The team enjoyed an off day yesterday but will resume practice today in preparation for the season opener Jan. 25 against New Mexico.
