ASUA senators strike Alternative Spring Break funding

Pride Alliance will sponsor Awareness Week beginning Monday

More than 100 Alternative Spring Break participants may not be able to make their trip to Los Angeles after the ASUA Senate struck the item's funding from approval in a 7-1-2 vote at last night's meeting.

The $1,319.95 request included mostly traveling costs.

Several senators were concerned about approving the request because the state does not allow the Associated Students of the University of Arizona to fund activities based on philanthropic services.

The 103 Alternative Spring Break participants plan to work with AIDS Project Los Angeles during their spring break.

The trip is more of an educational experience for students, said Neeta Thakur, Alternative Spring Break director.

The money request will be sent back to the Appropriations Board, where it will be reviewed again.

The American Society of Agricultural Engineers' request for $795.75 to help build an engine for a tractor competition was also passed.

A special funding request for $170 by the Nature Club was passed that will be used for the travel and lodging of a guest lecturer.

Awareness Week sponsored by Pride Alliance, will take place every day from noon to 1 p.m. during the week of Feb. 11, Pride Alliance director Jonna Lopez announced at yesterday's ASUA meeting.

The week will include an ice cream social on Monday in the Pride Alliance office located on the third floor of the Student Union Memorial Center, in the ASUA office.

Tuesday's event, located near the fountain by old Main, will be dedicated to national freedom and the legalization of same sex marriages.

A community outreach fair will be held Wednesday on the Mall.

Thursday, condom grams will be available on the Mall while a variety show takes place on the Mall Stage.

Friday is planned to be "ally day," where Pride Alliance will be looking for allies of the gay community.
