KAMP radio boils over with 'Auditory Cooze'

For the mad love of hip-hop, DJ Teal One and crew spin the longest-running KAMP radio show of recent times. "Auditory Cooze," an urban music/would-be cooking show, has aired on the station for four straight years.

Matthew Wexler, a communication senior better known to his congregation as DJ Teal One, is the host and originator of the weekly show.

Complementing Teal One's game are his loyal cronies that "just don't quit." Undeclared freshman Justin Drexler, staged as HexDiggity, and business senior Clay Johnson, or Yalc One-Oh, help to bring the lyrical circus full circle.

Teal One's gig runs the gamut on rare, classic and underground urban vibe.

The troupe declared that what makes its show so resilient is that it represents music differently than commercial radio.

"Commercial radio is geared at annoying songs and retarded nonsense," Johnson said. "We don't play the norm. Our show is more involved."

Drexler agreed.

"College radio is the students," he said. "It represents them and their views. It is by them, for them. A lot of our music is underground that most wouldn't hear otherwise. (The show is) a way for people to connect to what they're looking for."

Wexler grants that while his show, along with student radio at UA, is alive and well, it has a lot of growing up to do.

Formerly on the AM dial at 1570, the station now broadcasts online only.

"It's difficult for kids to listen with us only available on the Internet. We apply to get an FM frequency every year, and each year the feds squash it," Wexler said. "We think they are afraid of the competition we would provide to commercial radio. After all, the University of Arizona is the center of the city."

Mike Camarillo, broadcast adviser for Arizona Student Media, agreed.

"We submitted an application for an AM frequency last summer and haven't heard anything since," Camarillo said.

Something many non-listeners may not realize about the show is that its main inspiration from day one has been none other than · a chicken. Whether basted, baked or laid, the chicken runs a deep-fried cord throughout the broadcasts. In fact, a "Chicken with Record" is the icon for the "Auditory Cooze" label.

According to Teal and his cohorts, a fine breed of chick provides much in the way of funk flavor.

"Chicken are everywhere to us," Johnson said. "Since our show (began), (chickens) have never been the same."

All chickening aside, "Auditory Cooze" remains the only campus show specializing in urban music liberation. The threesome's services are available on an on-call basis.

"We're totally interactive. People can call and freestyle against us anytime," challenges Wexler.

DJ Teal One plans to slip his radio tongue to San Francisco State for grad school.

Camarillo believes in Wexler's worth at KAMP radio.

"Matt's show is a great contribution to what the station is all about," Camarillo said. "He is providing a good service to our listeners."

"No one has been there for four years like me," Wexler said. "Some kids just do (radio) for the fuck of it. I'm not doing it just because I love hip-hop. I think I have a future in it."

"Auditory Cooze" plays on http://KAMP.arizona.edu every Wednesday night from 10 to midnight.
