ÎAfghan' remark insensitive, stupid, chicken and uneducated

"The dumbest dog in the world is the Afghan."

I saw this sentence in the Sept. 6 Arizona Daily Wildcat, page 10. This is a very eye-catching and yet sensitive statement. It might be true, if you mean what you say; and maybe you should put this under "Fast Facts."

If you mean something else, however, you are just a little bit chicken to show your stupidity and how uneducated you are. After all, it is not that funny. [Read article]

Bell tower not fit for the lives it must honor

In what will likely be the most moving part of Wednesday's Sept. 11 commemoration ceremony, the USS Arizona bell now hanging in the Student Union Memorial Center will be rung in the memory of the six UA alumni killed in the World Trade Center. It will also be rung subsequently every month in memory of the Pearl Harbor victims who died on the USS Arizona.

Such attention to the bell rightfully draws our eye to to the tower that houses it, and many will likely be disappointed by what they see. A nightmarish checkerboard of red and tan manufactured block, the tower was designed to symbolize not just the prow of a battleship but an extension of Canyon Wall, which stretches along a ravine through the union. What should have been the jewel of the union anchoring it to the landscape was never provided the appropriate material ÷ Arizona stone ÷ nor worthy craftsmen. [Read article]

The Arizona race for governor:

On the Democratic side, Attorney General Janet Napolitano had her party's nomination locked up long before she declared herself a gubernatorial candidate. On the Republican end, former congressman Matt Salmon is the frontrunner, but a path to November isn't quite as clear for him thanks to a tough challenge from Secretary of State Betsey Bayless.

Over the summer I had a chance to sit down and chat with all three top contenders. My questions centered around two key issues: UA's budget shortfall, and Arizona's new and controversial Clean Elections law. [Read article]
