Fans at UA's Hillenbrand Stadium may have seen one game, but UA head coach Mike Candrea saw an entirely different one.

For those who packed the stadium to watch the Wildcats defeat the University of New Mexico 8-0, saw a dominating offensive performance by Arizona in the Worth Wildcat Invitational yesterday.

Just like last weekend, the Wildcats forced the eight-run mercy rule into effect after six innings.

"We started off slowly, but our defense was good and we got things going," UA pitcher Alicia Hollowell said. "We need to get things going from the beginning and be more aggressive."

The Wildcats (18-2) jumped off to an early 1-0 lead after a double from freshman first baseman Shelly Schultz in the bottom of the second inning.

Junior catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest sent a three-run blast over the left field wall in the fifth inning to add to UA's lead, 6-0.

It was senior shortstop Lovieanne Jung who put the Lobos out of their misery after a two-run single put UA ahead by eight runs and ended the game.

Arizona finished in second place and was 4-1 overall.

The Wildcats' only loss of the weekend was a 1-0 performance against Oklahoma State.

The Cowgirls swept the weekend 5-0 and were crowned the tournament champions.

For Candrea, the team's win wasn't as flawless as many might think.

"I think that right now, the team isn't tough," Candrea said. "We talked about it and it's not sinking in. We have no killer instinct, and only a few people are ready to compete."

Candrea referred to two base running errors the Wildcats committed as well as not being consistent, both offensively and defensively.

"They're a great bunch of kids but the Pac-10 throws punches," Candrea said. "We're too nice to people, and I want them to be a more aggressive team. I want to win but I want to win the right way."

However, not everything Candrea saw yesterday was bad.

"Alicia's throwing well and I can't complain," he said. "She'll continue to get better and likes to compete. For moments we played well, but I'm ready for a complete game."

Hollowell pitched all six innings and struck out six batters.

Offensively, the whole weekend, with the exception of the loss to the Cowgirls, resembled yesterday's win over New Mexico.

The Wildcats rolled over Western Michigan 10-0 and Virginia 13-1 on Saturday.

Arizona's first win of the tournament was an 11-0 shutout against Drake.

The Wildcats will host one more tournament next weekend to test their skills at home.

According to Candrea, UA has taken advantage of its home crowd but still hasn't played up to its potential.

Arizona kicks off the Hillenbrand Invitational next weekend against New Mexico State and the Dutch International team on Friday.
