Lacrosse rebounds to shutout Fort Louis Saturday, 15-0

After a "terrible" 9-3 win over lowly ASU, the men's lacrosse team bounced back Saturday with a 15-0 rout of Ft. Lewis.

The No. 5 Laxcats (4-1, 3-0) took out their frustrations on the Skyhawks (0-1, 0-0), with 13 players getting points and attackman Adam Paris and midfielder David Sherman each tallying hat tricks.

"We played well. I was happy with our performance today, offensively and defensively," said head coach Adam Hopkins.

Though Arizona remained undefeated in league play by besting the Lax Devils (1-5, 0-5) on Friday in the rain and sub-50-degree weather, it was not a performance the team was happy about, Hopkins said.

"We played terrible; we played awful," Hopkins said. "We didn't play our style of lacrosse, but we bounced back today (Saturday). I was pretty sure neither team could beat us, so it wasn't about them. It wasn't about ASU, it wasn't about Fort Lewis, it was about Arizona lacrosse. Today we played it; yesterday we didn't."

Against ASU, Arizona let the Lax Devils hang around, after a 4-3 first quarter, but the Laxcats out scored their rival 4-0 in the second to distance themselves a bit.

"We were all very disappointed with the way we played, today in the huddle before the game there were a lot of apologies," Hopkins said. "Basically, before the game we all said, including me, 'No more excuses, no more apologies, just go out and do it.'"

The weekend did see attackman Jeems Lochridge score five goals and tally seven assists and attackman Josh Morrison and midfielder Ryan McFadden return from injuries.

"I'm a big fan of watching McFadden run in the open field, and it is nice to see him with his legs back," Hopkins said. "Josh was our big target in the middle. Both teams focused on him and it opened up things on the outside."

The team did not have star goalie Sean Koffel, because of what Hopkins called "personal engagements," but his replacements in the crease, mostly Steve Zeppieri, Greg Abdouch and Charlie Salemi fared well, shutting out Ft. Lewis and getting 12 saves against ASU.

"We are confident in all our goalies; all three played well. We got a shut out today. Koffel couldn't have done any better than that," Hopkins said. "He is still our number one guy."

Arizona was moved next door to Rincon Vista on Saturday because of damage incurred on the Murphey Stadium turf. The team will stay at Rincon Vista for its next home game before returning to its true home field for its next home stand at the end of the month.

With the wins, the team remained ranked No. 3 in the first regular season WCLL poll released Friday, behind only USLIA No.1 Sonoma State and No. 4 UC Santa Barbara.

The Laxcats return to action in a rare weekday home game when they host NCAA Division III St. John Fisher.
