The rest of the field takes the court today following UA's showdown with UCLA
No. 4 Arizona State (11-7, 19-10) vs.
No. 5 Oregon (10-8, 20-9)
Game time: 4:30 p.m.
After getting smoked by Arizona State a week ago, Oregon wants a little revenge in the rubber match. Many experts of "Bracketology" say the Ducks need a win against the Sun Devils to secure a berth in the NCAA Tournament. On the other side, ASU is trying to win 20 games for the first time since 1995, and a win against the Ducks today would accomplish that. A victory would also nearly guarantee a spot in the tournament for a Sun Devil team that has only been dancing twice in the last 21 years. Luke Ridnour, the Pac-10 Player of the Year, could be playing in his last conference game if the Ducks lose. It's been rumored that the Oregon junior point guard will declare for the NBA Draft after the season. For ASU, the Sun Devils have an award winner of their own with freshman player of the year Ike Diogu.
No. 2 Stanford (23-7 14-4) vs.
No. 7 USC (11-16 6-12)
Game time: 7:40 p.m.
Whew ÷ that is what the Trojan players are saying after collapsing in the second half of the season and nearly missing the conference tournament at all. After losing seven straight games, Southern California needed a win Saturday against Washington State, the worst team in the conference on to get in. They pulled it off with help from a big game from Desmon Farmer. The Cardinal, on the other hand, has won seven of eight games with its only loss coming to top-ranked Arizona. Stanford wins games on the defensive end of the court, leading the conference in scoring defense at 66.6 points per game. USC will need Farmer (18.4 ppg) to step up if the Trojans are going to be able to eliminate the Cardinal for the second straight year in the tournament. This time they will have to do it with a much younger corps of players.
No. 3 California (20-7, 13-5) vs.
No. 6 Oregon State (13-14, 6-12)
Game Time: 10:10 p.m.
In its history, Cal has never played in the postseason five years in a row. Win or lose tonight against Oregon State, the Golden Bears are a lock for the Big Dance. The Beavers are just happy to be in the position they're in right now. The team's sixth place finish is the school's best in 10 years, and a lot of that credit can be given to a solid core of seniors and first-year head coach Jay John. But it could take more than just them to end a 10-game losing streak to the Golden Bears. OSU played the Arizona schools tough last weekend with good games from senior Phil Ricci. The bruiser inside could cause problems for a Cal team that likes to get up the floor and run with Joe Shipp and Brian Wethers. This game is not scheduled to start until 9:10 p.m. in Los Angeles and could get pushed back even further if the previous games run longer.
