It's the same old story for the Arizona softball team ÷ another weekend, another tournament.

At least it's a new kind of tourney for the No. 1 Wildcats (26-2), a pool-play setup allowing 16 teams to battle it out over the next four days in Fullerton, Calif. This is the seventh consecutive weekend UA has participated in a tournament. and the fourth away from Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium in Tucson.

Taking its 12-game winning streak into the KIA Klassic, Arizona has been placed in Pool D, along with Louisiana-Lafayette (14-2), Florida State (18-7) and Long Beach State (9-12).

On the all-time list, UA holds a 21-9 record over Long Beach State. The 49ers went 2-3 last weekend at the San Diego State Tournament.

The opposition will also feature six of the top-10 teams in the nation. In addition to the Wildcats, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Nebraska, No. 5 Washington and No. 6 Oklahoma will play.

"This is great competition," said head coach Mike Candrea. "They can take advantage of your mistakes. We have to be the aggressor."

The tournament schedule has every team play everyone in its pool, and from that, a 16-team championship bracket is formed, with the championship on Sunday afternoon.

Today, the top-ranked Wildcats take on the No. 16 Seminoles at 11 a.m. and the Raging Cajuns at 3 p.m.

"We have to see how well we can adjust," Candrea said. "If you only get two or three at-bats a game, you have to be able to adjust."

Florida State placed two players on the All-Seminole Invitational team, even though the tournament was called due to rain after two days of competition. FSU went 3-0 in the games they played. The Seminoles upset then-No. 3 Nebraska, in extra innings.

"We are definitely going to grow as a team," said junior Mackenzie Vandersgeest of this weekend's competition.

Candrea was glad to see his team was scoring early and said when competition becomes better defense becomes a premium.

Last time out, the Wildcats went and conquered the competition in Lubbock, Texas, going 5-0 over the course of the Red Raider Classic. UA outscored its opponents 38-0 in the five-game span.

The outfield fence was not able to contain the Wildcats as they popped 12 home runs during the tournament. Sophomore Courtney Fossatti hit her first career grand slam, Vandergeest added her third grand slam of the season and senior Lovie Jung added three HRs to give her 14 on the year.

"Every game, we come out like we're playing against a team who wants to be successful," said freshman pitcher Alicia Hollowell. "We're here to play."

Hollowell continued her dominance in the circle, going 3-0 while throwing for 20 innings, sending 20 batters back to the dugout. On the season, she is now 15-2, with a 0.26 ERA and 158 Ks.
