The last time senior Lovie Jung was batting against Jessica van der Linden, it was the 2002 semi-finals of the College World Series and the game went for 11 innings.
Not as much was at stake yesterday, when the two teams took the field at the KIA Klassic in Fullerton, Calif., but the Seminole wind did not blow in Florida State's (19-8) favor.
After walking in the first inning, Jung followed sophomore Courtney Fossatti's single with a deep homer to center, Jung's 15th of the season.
The 2-0 lead for the top-ranked Wildcats (28-2) would be enough behind the arm of freshman Alicia Hollowell, who allowed only three hits, to hold off the No. 16 Seminoles.
Hollowell struck out 10 and allowed only two walks to improve her record to 13-2 on the season.
"Hollowell threw a great game," head coach Mike Candrea said.
Fossatti added another single in the bottom of the fourth, and sophomore Candace Abrams had two singles to center field in the second and in the third after Jung's homer.
The Wildcats managed seven hits off of van der Linden and extended the all-time record against the Tribe to 9-0.
In their second game of the day, the Wildcats beat Louisiana-Lafayette, 7-3. From the circle, Wendy Allen held the Ragin' Cajuns to only three hits, while Arizona blasted 13, featuring a three RBI day from junior Mackenzie Vandergeest.
"We jumped on them early," Candrea said of the early lead against the Ragin' Cajuns. "Allen threw very well, and then we brought in Hollowell."
Freshmen Autumn Champion and Michelle Shultz had two hits each, alongside two-hit games from Fossatti and Allen.
The Wildcats left 12 on base in the game while only suffering two strike-outs.
Allen struck out seven of the 21 hitters she faced in her 5 and 1/3 innings. Hollowell finished the last five batters, striking out four.
Today the Wildcats take on Long Beach State (10-13) at 3 p.m. in the final game of the pool portion of the tournament. After the pool round is over, all 16 teams in the tournament will be ranked in a single-elimination bracket for the championship game on Sunday afternoon.
Long Beach State was picked to finish third in the Big West conference this season; the 49ers have won three conference titles since the 1996 season. UA has a 21-9 all-time record against the 49ers.
