The Arizona women's tennis team came out yesterday hoping to repeat its last performance against No. 7 Arizona State, but it was not to be as poor play led to a 5-1 beating at the hands of the Sun Devils.
A month ago, the Wildcats had hopes of taking down ASU after they started their match, but rain forced a premature conclusion with UA leading 2-1 ÷ up one set in two matches and close in the other.
Under NCAA guidelines a match can be continued, but if it is not finished within 48 hours, the guidelines require that the teams reschedule and begin the match 0-0.
"It was tough we had to quit that match," said head coach Vicky Maes. "But that's just the way it goes, and you have to deal with it. And we didn't deal with it very well."
The Wildcats were a different team yesterday afternoon and got knocked off by the interstate rivals 5-1.
Maes said the team needs to be more unified in its remaining tournaments.
"I believe that everyone needs to show up because we have gotten really good individual performances. But as a team we haven't really come together," Maes said. "This is the time we need to really turn it around, and we need a good finish if you want to feel good about the semester."
The match of the day came from the rackets of Arizona's Emilie Scribot and Adria Engel of Arizona State, the two best players of their respective teams.
The match looked to be another blowout for the Wildcat graduate student, but after being up (5-3) in the first set, Engel started her comeback.
With two breaks, Engel was back in the set and ended up winning it (7-5) and stripping the momentum from Scribot.
It didn't last long for the Toulouse, France, native to bounce back, and Scribot breezed through the second set (6-1) and looked to be cruising to another win.
"In my mind, I was thinking I was winning (5-3) in the first set and then lost, so I came out (in the second set) and really wanted to win." Scribot said, "I wanted to show that I can win a set easily and I never gave up."
The All-American from ASU was too tough and pulled out the third set with a (7-0) tiebreaker win after she came back from being down (5-3) in that set.
"When I was leading (5-3) in the third set and was serving (for the match) I had to win that game. And after I lost that, I knew I was going to lose that set." Scribot said, "I had a really bad (service) game and that just did me in."
The final match was in front of both teams. And even with the results being all but over, the excitement was still high and emotions came from both sides of the court.
The loss was at the eve of the team's trip to California to take on UCLA and University of Southern California this weekend.
"We need to be more positive," sophomore Maja Mlakar said. "We have had some tough losses but if we work hard and stay positive, it should pay off."
