UA track and field will look to retain its trophy this weekend by repeating in the Jim Click Shootout held in Tucson.
Joining Arizona in vying for the ultimate prize in the Jim Click-sponsored meet will be squads from the University of Colorado and Cal State Los Angeles.
A full squad will be competing for the Wildcats this weekend with one notable exception. Pole vault sensation Amy Linnen will be out of the Wildcats' lineup this Saturday, as the junior nurses a foot injury she suffered at the indoor nationals.
Linnen's injury occurred about four steps into her approach during her second vault at the NCAA nationals in Arkansas when she felt a "twinge" on the bottom of her foot.
"I don't know what happened to it, but it definitely held me back," said Linnen.
For the time being, the competitive Linnen will be forced to the bench, a proposition the junior takes in stride.
"It's frustrating. I really want to get back for outdoor season and start competing. Until then I have to sit back and watch for now until I get the OK from the doctor," she said.
Taking Linnen's spot in the lineup will be a talented group of vaulters capable of carrying the squad. Newcomer Connie Jerez joins veteran seniors Juanita Braun and Phyllis Brown and sophomore Whitney Schauer.
Linnen is confident in her fellow Wildcats; if she cannot be with them on the field she will be there to back her teammates from the stands.
"I'll be there supporting the team, it will be exciting to watch," said Linnen of her teammates. "They're playing really well, the team is holding together. They all have improved since the beginning of the year. I think big things are about to happen for them."
Unlike most meets where events are based on individual performances rather than team points, the meet this Saturday at Roy P. Drachman Stadium will feature a combination of men's and women's scores to determine a winner.
Earlier this week, Amanda Underwood took center stage for the Wildcats, competing in the Mike Maynard Heptathlon. The sophomore claimed several personal bests in her second place finish. Underwood's combined score was good enough to land the Tucson native an automatic bid into the Pac-10 Combined Championships May 10 and 11.
This weekend's Jim Click Shootout will be the last time Arizona track and field will compete in Tucson until late May. Both squads hit the road next weekend to compete against tough competition in the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational in Los Angeles.
