Game Notes: Freshmen push into lineup for Elite Eight

ANAHEIM, Calif. ÷ As familiar as it has become to see Salim Stoudamire knocking down a 3-pointer this year, it has also become common to see him sitting on the bench with a towel over his head.

Stoudamire was once again sitting on the bench when UA needed him the most. He played just eight minutes in the second half.

Part of the reason for that was the play of freshman Hassan Adams, but Stoudamire took some of the blame after suffering a hip-pointer ÷ severe bruise to the hip ÷ in the first half.

"Instead of using (the injury) as motivation to get tougher I let it bother me," said Stoudamire, who finished with four points and took only four shots, all 3-pointers. "Coach felt Hassan and Andre (Iguodala) were playing terrific, and they were."

Adams finished with 11 points and four rebounds while playing 26 minutes off the bench.

Hawks off and running

It was Kansas playing a fast-paced running game for nearly the entire 40 minutes, a style typically dominated by the UA.

"Kansas did a great job of really pushing the ball down our throat," UA head coach Lute Olson said.

KU finished the game with 22 fast break points, compared to the Wildcats' two.

"It's important for us to get out and run (and) look for fast break points," Kansas head coach Roy Williams said. "These guys played their tails off today."

Kansas' own two-headed monster

As great as senior Nick Collison was Thursday against Duke, scoring 33 points and pulling down 19 boards, Kirk Hinrich might have been better Saturday against UA.

Hinrich scored 28 points, making six 3-pointers, and had five assists along with five rebounds against UA after he shot 1-of-9 from the field against Duke.

"Ever since I've played with him I knew he had more heart and guts than anyone I've ever played with, or seen," said Collison about his fellow-senior teammate Hinrich. "He came out with a different mindset today."

Collison was held to just eight points, largely in part to the 1-3-1 defense that paid off so well for the Wildcats in their first meeting with KU.

"It was frustrating," Collison said. "The whole game was frustrating for me because I couldn't get it going."

Frye not expected to leave for draft

UA sophomore center Channing Frye squashed rumors once again that he was headed to the NBA after the season.

"No, not after losing this," Frye said. "Definitely not. I feel like I can work on so many more things. I owe it to these guys."

Frye, who battled foul trouble for most of the game, finished with just six points and five rebounds.

Likins embraces team after loss

Being a former athlete, UA President Pete Likins knows how it feels to lose.

After the Wildcats lost to Kansas Saturday, Likins made sure to show his support.

After the game, he gave the team a pep talk and also gave each player a hug in the locker room.
