Women's tennis dominates WSU

The UA women's tennis team earned a split in Washington this weekend, taking home the Wildcats' first Pac-10 win of the season in the process.

The win on Friday came against No. 42 Washington State in a convincing fashion. Led by graduate student Emilie Scribot, the Wildcats defeated the Cougars handily, 6-1. On Saturday, the Wildcats did not fare as well, falling to ninth-ranked Washington, 2-5.

The Wildcats came out strong on Friday, winning all but one match against Washington State. Arizona jumped on the Cougars early, winning the doubles point. The duo of Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands won 8-6, while Debbie Larocque and Kristy Randono needed a tiebreaker to defeat the Cougars 9-8 (8-6).

The win for Arizona was its first in the Pac-10, pushing the Wildcats to 1-9 in the Pac-10 and 6-9 overall.

Arizona was unable to secure its second conference win of the season, despite the Wildcats' strong play Saturday against the Huskies.

"We expected a tough match," said head coach Vicky Maes. "Overall we played well, but we can play better."

Scribot, the Toulouse, France native and the Wildcats' number one singles player, won both of her matches over the weekend, as did Mlakar. The 75th-ranked Mlakar pulled off an upset against No. 45-ranked Dea Sumantri of Washington on Saturday in Seattle.

Despite the victories by the numbers one and two singles players, Arizona dropped the remaining four singles matches after previously losing the doubles point.

First year coach Maes attributes the Wildcats' conference woes to the inconsistency of the bottom of her lineup.

"Dianne Hollands has been consistent for us," said Maes, "Our four, five and sixes are not winning."

Scribot continues to lead the Wildcats. The 20th-ranked graduate student has won four of her past five matches, including the last three in a row, but the Wildcats cannot rely entirely on Scribot to succeed in the postseason.

Arizona returns to Tucson this week to face a solid Texas squad. The match against the Longhorns is scheduled for Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Robson Tennis Center, and will kick off a tough week for the Wildcats, who face conference foes Stanford and California this weekend.
