Women's tennis takes on Texas

By Christopher Wuensch

Coming off a strong weekend split in Washington, the UA women's tennis takes the court today to face off in an out of conference matchup against the Texas Longhorns.

After claiming their first Pacific-10 Conference win of the season against the No. 42 Cougars of Washington State on Friday, the Wildcats' bid to upset the No.9 Huskies of Washington fell short as Arizona lost 5-2.

Texas will begin a tour of Arizona on Tuesday and Wednesday to face the Wildcats and Sun Devils. The Longhorns, 8-9 on the season and 7-1 in the Big Ten, are coming off a narrow defeat at the hands of No. 4 Duke over the weekend.

Last season in Thousand Oaks Racquet Club in San Antonio, the Longhorns squeaked by the Wildcats by a score of 4-3. The Longhorns lead the series history between the two schools 12 games to 4.

Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said she feels the Longhorns are a formidable opponent not to taken lightly.

"With the new computer ranking system this year, few teams in my opinion are not ranked as high as maybe they should be," Maes said. "I think Texas is one of those teams."

Texas is currently ranked 35th by the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Arizona ranks 45th despite its 1-9 Pac-10 record, in a conference that boasts the top three squads in the nation ÷ Southern California, Stanford and California.

The Wildcats lineup features three players ranked in the top 100 in the nation. Emilie Scribot heads that list at No. 20 followed by No. 54 Dianne Hollands and No. 75 Maja Mlakar.

The match against the Longhorns is scheduled to get under way today at 1 p.m. at the Robson Tennis Center. The Wildcats will continue their home stand this weekend taking on Pac-10 elite squads Stanford and Cal on Friday and Saturday respectively.
