After sweeping No. 11 Arizona State (28-15, 5-6 Pac-10) at home over the weekend with an 8-0 victory on Friday night and a 2-1 win on Saturday, the No. 1 Arizona softball team (41-4, 10-1 Pac-10) travels to Tempe on Wednesday for a round three. The crowd of 2,811 at Saturday's intrastate show-down was a season high for Hillenbrand Stadium.
'Cats carrying big sticks
The bats were not silent for the Wildcats over the weekend; freshman Autumn Champion had six singles, going 3-for-4 in both games, bringing her season average to .459, and sophomore Courtney Fossatti was 4-for-4 on Friday. Champion leads the Pac-10 in hits, with 73 on the season. Senior Lovie Jung continued to show why she is an Amateur Softball Player of the Year nominee, hitting a three-run homer to open the scoring on Friday night. Jung leads the Pacific-10 conference and the nation in fence-clearers with 22 and is already seventh on the UA single-season list. Jung leads the Pac-10 in four other categories: runs scored (48), RBIs (64), doubles (17) and total bases (142).
Hollowell still red-hot
Fellow Player of the Year nominee Alicia Hollowell turned more heads this weekend with her two wins over ASU. Hollowell was in the circle for 9 1/3 innings over the weekend, striking out nine, and allowing zero earned runs. The Pac-10 again named Hollowell conference Pitcher of the Week for her effort. This is the third time she has been selected to receive the weekly honor (March 18 and April 8) and the 79th time a Wildcat has been chosen for the award. Hollowell has wasted no time in her effort to get in the UA Hall of Champions, as her freshman stats are arguably better than many other Wildcat greats. Hollowell has strode off the field with a win 27 times ÷ the previous UA freshman record was 25, set by Becky Lemke (1998). Her ERA of 0.63 is second only to Susie Parra's 1991 season with a 0.43. Hollowell also has 20 shutouts and 259 strikeouts in 189 and two-thirds innings pitched.
All offense, all the time
The Wildcats on offense are tearing opposing pitching apart, leading the Pac-10 in numerous categories. UA has 279 runs scored, 21 ahead of second place UCLA (258), while collecting 401 hits, 28 ahead of the Bruins. The top-ranked Wildcats also lead the homerun and RBI categories with 58 and 259, respectively. Arizona has also been given the most free bases by pitchers with a league-leading 166, 40 of which belong to Jung. Opposing pitchers have been scared to hit the Wildcats with the ball, they have only been hit 16 times, good for second to last in the conference. UA's on base percentage is also a best-in-the-West, at .422, with only UCLA also breaking the .400 mark at .405.
