Aggressively forcing anti-war views on others disrespectful, not peaceful

Over the last few months, we have all become accustomed to the growing amount of protests in relation to the war in Iraq. However, today I personally saw it reach a new low that truly questions the limits of their "free speech."

As several men and women in uniform peacefully walked by, an activist would approach them and stop them in their tracks, demanding they take a flyer filled with anti-war propaganda. The manner in which this was done was by no means peaceful at all, it was rushed and aggravated, and the poor people were often taken aback. Now, I'm all for freedom of speech, that's one of the many things that makes this country so great. But this incident, which I only witnessed a small portion of, was over the line and an insult to our brave troops dying right now defending rights like freedom of speech. I think it's great to see people expressing their views, just not forcefully. They used to do that in countries like Iraq, which is one reason we went in there. [Read article]

Guest Commentary: Death penalty must be rethought

The next time midnight comes around you could be almost anywhere. Maybe you're playing pool in the Student Union Memorial Center, out on North Fourth Avenue with friends or studying down in the ILC. Regardless of where you are, a sobering thought may just cross through your mind as the clock moves to 12 a.m.: "Someone just died, and I have a hand in it."

America's capital punishment system is one fraught with error, inequality and chance. Moratoriums should be placed on it at the federal and state levels until these problems can be eliminated. [Read article]

photo American education loses to Iraqi rebuilding

I have to admit all of this talk about revitalizing the economy, rebuilding Iraq, anti-porn sentiment and idiots charging onto baseball fields has made my head hurt.

Not much going on has been making sense to me. I openly wonder why pissing off most of the world and sending Islamic fundamentalist groups more recruits than ever ÷ while neglecting homeland security ÷ makes us safer? I also wonder how, in the age of corporate malfeasance, giving rich crooks even more money that they will never spend helps create more jobs for the average American? [Read article]
