The women's golf team placed second at this weekend's Pac-10 Championship, ending a streak of three consecutive titles and dashing any hope of winning its seventh conference title, something no other program has ever accomplished.
The runner-up finish was mainly due to the Wildcats' inability to finish their round, something that has haunted them most of the year.
"I'm disappointed because we didn't finish well," head coach Greg Allen said. "We played the last five holes eight over par. A few girls got on the bogey train and couldn't get off."
Freshman Erica Blasberg continued her impressive freshman campaign with a third-place finish and her sixth top-five finish of the year.
"I was kind of disappointed because I didn't play well the last day and just finished really strong," Blasberg said. "I just figured it wasn't my week."
The Corona, Calif., native shot a 73 in the final round, three shots from California's Vikki Liang who posted a (71-72-73=216) even par total to help vault her Golden Bears to the Pac-10 title.
"Cal has been playing better than anyone," Allen said. "And USC was the second-hottest (team) coming in."
Even with the disappointing finish, Allen remains optimistic about the Regional Tournament and the NCAAs.
"I told the team after the last day that in no way does this keep us from winning the national championship," he said. "We're playing a course that we won the (Fall Preview) on earlier this year, and with the bad weather this week, it will only help us, come nationals."
Allen said the weather played a big part in the outcome of the tournament.
"The golf course was tough; the conditions were tough," Allen said. "It played really long, and the rough was 2 to 3 inches thick when we got there. And with all the rain, it was thicker. But I think this will help us at nationals because West Lafayette will be like it was this weekend."
The team will find out in the middle of the week which region (sites are Tempe, North Carolina and Nebraska) they are placed in.
The selection is somewhat like basketball, with the top 15 teams in the nation split up to play in three different regions.
After being selected to a region, 27 teams play and the top eight get to continue to the national championship.
The regional tournament will take place May 8 with a national championship bid on the line.
Blasberg named Pac-10 player, Freshman of the year
Erica Blasberg was named Pac-10 Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year on Saturday during the Pac-10 Championship awards ceremony. The All-America hopeful had six top-five finishes, along with victories at the Fall Preview and the Wildcat Invitational.
