The Arizona men's golf team opened the 2003 Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship by posting rounds at 13-over par and 7-over par yesterday to position itself in fourth place with 36 holes remaining in the three-day event. The Wildcats stand at 20-over-par after two rounds of play, trailing tournament leader UCLA by 14 shots.
UCLA, playing on its home course at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, Calif., assumed the day one lead after posting two rounds better than any single round by the other teams in the field. Standing at 6-over par, the Bruins lead second-place Stanford by seven shots. Washington is third at 17-over-par, while Arizona and Arizona State round out the top five.
Oregon State's Cameron MacKenzie holds the individual lead as he carded the day's only round in the 60s, shooting 69 in the morning round before posting a score of 71 in the afternoon round. MacKenzie is at 4-under-par, one shot ahead of second-place Jim Seki of Stanford.
Senior Ricky Barnes is tied for seventh at even par after posting rounds of 71 and 73. Joining Barnes in the top 15 for UA is junior Chris Nallen. Nallen posted rounds of 75 and 72 to grab a share of 12th place at 3-over-par.
Fresh off a 7-under-par, top-20 performance at the PING/ASU Invitational earlier this month, sophomore Kipp Riehle is tied for 28th at 7-over-par 151. The afternoon round saw him shoot 74 (+2). Senior Brian Woolf is tied with Riehle for 28th.
Seniors Reid Hatley and Andrew Medley round out the Arizona lineup and are tied for 30th and 33rd places, respectively. Hatley posted a two-round total of 8-over-par, while Medley stands one shot behind at 9-over-par.
