photo Sweep of Cal eludes 'Cats in extra innings

The Arizona baseball team fell victim to another late-game implosion in yesterday's series finale against Cal, nullifying a ninth-inning Wildcat rally with a car wreck of a 10th inning that dashed any hopes of the season's first conference sweep.

"Every wheel that we had on our truck definitely fell off," head coach Andy Lopez said of the 12-7 defeat at Sancet Field. "I think even the spare came out of the trunk. They're all rolling down I-10 right now. It was a bad inning in every way, shape and form." [Read article]

Commentary: Students ripped off by ÎZoo'

Sentiment around campus has been pretty much unanimous in support of a new system for allocating men's basketball tickets following last fall's fiasco at McKale Center. But the new Zona Zoo plan, though a nice idea, will not remedy the situation, and will only result in more Wildcat fans going only to basketball games.

Students constantly lament the same old things about UA basketball games: The best seats are filled with Tucson's gentry; the student seats are scattered, helter-skelter, in groups of 10 or 12 from behind the basket to those little yellow seats in the sky; tickets are scarce; there's no alcohol. photo UA avenges loss, sweeps Stanford

The No. 1 Arizona softball team made up for the 4-3 loss it suffered to Stanford at UA's Hillenbrand Stadium earlier this season by sweeping the Cardinal during its road trip to Northern California this weekend.

After seeing Friday's matchup with No. 9 California cancelled due to rain, the Wildcats (47-4) defeated the No. 15 Cardinal (36-23) 6-0 ÷ thanks to a six-run sixth inning, keeping their 10 game winning streak alive. [Read article]

Latimore headed for Notre Dame

Former Arizona basketball player Dennis Latimore has finally chosen his next destination.

The power forward decided to transfer to Notre Dame, where he will be eligible for the 2004-05 season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Latimore, who is still enrolled in classes at UA, quit the Wildcat basketball team on Feb. 25 for unspecified reasons.

It was rumored that Latimore decided to leave because of a lack of playing time after fighting for minutes with a crowded front court of Luke Walton, Channing Frye, Rick Anderson, Andre Iguodala and Isaiah Fox. [Read article]

photo Track and field falls to Sun Devils in 3 school meet

UA track and field fell short in its bid to defeat rival Arizona State in the state's three-school meet in Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe this weekend.

Men's and women's squads from UA, ASU and Northern Arizona squared off against one another on Saturday in the annual outdoor double dual meet. The Wildcats had no problem with NAU, as both the men's and women's squads disposed of the Lumberjacks by over 40 points. Neither Arizona squad was as fortunate versus the Sun Devils however, dropping their closely contested meets by less than 10 points. [Read article]
