Women pick up No. 16 seed as men head to Berkeley for tourney

The No. 22 Arizona women's tennis team (9-11, 3-5 Pacific-10 conference) was chosen last week as the 16th seed at the 2003 NCAA Division 1 Women's Tennis Championship.

The Wildcats will face the Purple Eagles of Niagara University in the first round.

The NCAA also announced last week that three Wildcat individuals and one doubles team was selected to participate in the 2003 Division I women's tennis tournament.

Graduate student Emilie Scribot, ranked No. 5 in the nation, received an invitation along with sophomores Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar ÷ ranked No. 45 and No. 29 respectively.

The No. 24 doubles duo of Scribot and Mlakar was also chosen to participate.

Harvard University will host first and second round action this weekend in Cambridge, Mass.

The No. 34 UA men's squad will travel to Berkeley, Calif. for the first round of the men's championship.

The Wildcats, led by juniors Whi Kim, Carl Hagman, and freshman Roger Matalonga, will square off against WAC conference champion Boise State in first round action this weekend.

Jefferson joins Bibby with USA Basketball

According to ESPN.com reports last week, USA Basketball will invite former Arizona and current New Jersey Nets forward Richard Jefferson to join its Olympic qualifying team this summer, along with former Duke star Elton Brand and Nick Collison, who just completed his eligibility at Kansas.

Brand currently plays for the Los Angeles Clippers, while Collison is expected to be chosen in next month's NBA draft.

Depending on their performances this summer, the three could be added to the U.S. Olympic roster, set to compete in 2004 in Athens, Greece.

Among the NBA players already on the team are big men Tim Duncan, Karl Malone and Jermaine O'Neal, small forward Tracy McGrady and guards Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen and Mike Bibby ÷ a member of Arizona's 1997 NCAA national championship winning team.
