Kirk Walters, a South Christian High School basketball player, was the only UA basketball recruit who attended "Midnight Madness" Friday.

The 6-foot-10 senior forward from Grand Rapids, Mich., caught the attention of the Arizona coaching staff when he played in the Adidas Big-Time Camp in Las Vegas in July.

Arizona invited Walters to Midnight Madness as a part of his recruiting trip.

"It's been a great opportunity to check out and see what the players and coaches are like," he said. "It's something you can't pass up."

Walters has a three-star rating and is known for his athleticism and mobility, according to national recruiting service Rivals.com. This was the final recruiting trip for Walters after he went to Central Michigan and Western Michigan earlier this year.

"One of the two main things I look for is the coach, because he is someone who wants to teach (Kirk) good values," said Muriel Walters, Kirk's mother. "I also want his teammates to be strong, with integrity."

Walters took in the night's festivities from his front-row seat, directly behind the players' bench, after he met with the UA coaching staff. Earlier, he toured the campus and the Eller College of Business and Public Administration.

During a lunch Friday at Frog & Firkin with the coaching staff, Walters stood back-to-back with sophomore center Channing Frye in a contest of height. Frye looked to have a couple inches on the high-schooler.

Overall, Walters said he was impressed with the school on his trip.

"It's really exciting to be here. This town is really basketball-crazy," he said. "I like the players and I like the coaches, they all get along great so I think that's the main attraction here."

On Saturday, Walters attended the first practice of the season and then had an informal shootaround in front of the coaches.

His sister, Kerry, is the all-time leading scorer at Calvin College in Grand Rapids.

Arizona has already received verbal commitments from Houston's Ndudi Ebi and Philadelphia's Mustafa Shakur, both top-ranked players in the nation. Oral contracts are non-binding until national signing day on Nov. 13. Walters doesn't know if he will make a decision before the deadline.

"I think I may make a commitment before November, but I'm not sure. I just need some more time," he said.
