photo Fans flock to practice

More than 1,500 fans showed up early Saturday morning to watch the Arizona men's basketball team scrimmage for 35 minutes in McKale Center.

It was the team's first open practice in nearly two years, and it might have attracted the biggest crowd ever to watch an open scrimmage at UA.

"I think it was a great crowd," Arizona head coach Lute Olson said. "It helps get the adrenaline going as tired as the guys are." [Read article]

UA Football Notes: October wins hard to come by for UA

October is often known as a month of scares, and in the last two seasons, the UA football team has had a lot to be afraid about.

Since the arrival of head coach John Mackovic, Arizona has gone 0-7 in October.

With Halloween approaching, things get even scarier. The Wildcats close out October next weekend with a home game against No. 9 Washington State, who is coming off a bye week.

The Wildcats have now started their Pacific 10 Conference season at 0-3 for the second-straight year. Last season, Arizona didn't get its first conference win until its sixth game, when it beat Cal 38-24 on the road. The Wildcats have lost 14 of their last 16 Pac-10 games, including three in a row. Volleyball impressive in weekend sweep of UO, OSU

The UA women's volleyball team has been battling inconsistency and imbalance in its offensive attack during the first half of the season, but that all changed this weekend in its road trip to the state of Oregon.

The No. 19 Wildcats were firing on all cylinders offensively, and freshmen Bre Ladd and Kim Glass led the way.

Arizona (10-7 overall, 5-4 Pacific 10 Conference) dominated Oregon and Oregon State as it swept both teams 3-0 to mark the first time UA has gone on the road this season and come away with a sweep. [Read article]

Luck's not the culprit

Luck.

Some people believe in it, some don't. Regardless of anyone's belief in its role in sports, it is safe to say that other than a controversial call in Arizona's favor to preserve a victory against Utah, the Arizona Wildcats have had none.

Not even a little.

But this weekend at Stanford, Arizona again found a way to lose öö this time by failing to show up as a team.

And luck had nothing to do with it. [Read article]

photo Soccer drops 2 nail-biters

Two heartbreaking losses against ranked opponents this weekend seemed more like moral victories for the women's soccer team.

Arizona lost 2-1 in overtime yesterday against No. 19 Southern California after Friday's 1-0 loss to No. 7 UCLA. The close losses help continue the soccer program's yearlong improvement.

"The transformation of this program is a season-long process and it won't happen in one game," head coach Cathy Klein said. "We're really going to develop a belief in ourselves at the highest level and I think we're doing that." [Read article]

photo Club soccer continues to roll

The Arizona men's soccer team continued its season- long dominance with a weekend series sweep that earned the Wildcats an invitation to the regional tournament.

With its two victories in this weekend's Arizona sub-regional tournament over Embry Riddle and Arizona State, UA solidified its birth in the regional tournament. The dominating style of play that the Wildcats have adopted has earned them a 12-0 record and a possible No. 1 ranking in the upcoming Las Vegas regional. [Read article]

Rugby brings the heat

Arizona men's rugby kicked off its season this weekend with an inspiring series sweep against two formidable opponents.

On Friday, the Wildcats kicked off their season with a hard-nosed battle in Laramie, Wyo., defeating the Cowboys 11-10.
