Arizona volleyball report card: midseason grades
After a Final Four appearance last season, it would seem likely that the Arizona volleyball team would receive an A. However, this season, the Wildcats have not been playing up to the same level as last year's group. The Wildcats (10-7 overall, 5-4 Pacific 10 Conference) began the season No. 6 but have dropped down 10 spots since opening day.
Even though it has dropped in the rankings, Arizona has shown signs that it's close to regaining the spark that took the team to the school's first Final Four last season.

Hometown: Corona, Calif.
Why she won: Blasberg won the Stanford Women's Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif. with a three-under-par final round of 69, claiming her first-ever career victory. After a first round one-over-par 73, she was the only player to finish under par in each of the last two rounds, playing six-under-par in the final 36 holes.

Barnes joins US team in Malaysia
Fresh off a U.S. Amateur Championship, Arizona men's golfer Ricky Barnes will compete for the United States in the World Amateur Team Championship, beginning tomorrow, at the Saujana Golf & Country Club.
Sixty-three countries are scheduled to compete for the Eisenhower Trophy at the 2002 World Amateur Team Championship. The 72-hole stroke play event will be played tomorrow through Sunday. Each nation is represented by a three-man team, with the two lowest scores counting towards the team total each day.

Seniors Walton, Gardner named to Naismith list
Arizona seniors Luke Walton and Jason Gardner head a list of 30 candidates for the Naismith Award, which is given to the nation's top college basketball player.
The list ÷ which was released yesterday ÷ was chosen by a board of selectors made up of leading basketball coaches, journalists and basketball analysts.
Arizona is one of two schools that has two players on the list, Kansas being the other with Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich.

NCAA wants eligibility requirements to focus more on classroom, less on tests
INDIANAPOLIS ÷ The NCAA wants to change eligibility requirements for incoming student-athletes by lowering the emphasis on standardized tests and increasing the weight of classroom work.
In a sweeping package of academic reforms approved yesterday, the Management Council increased the number of core courses high school students must take and extended the "sliding scale" that helps determine freshmen eligibility.
