Fresh off a U.S. Amateur Championship, Arizona men's golfer Ricky Barnes will compete for the United States in the World Amateur Team Championship, beginning tomorrow, at the Saujana Golf & Country Club.
Sixty-three countries are scheduled to compete for the Eisenhower Trophy at the 2002 World Amateur Team Championship. The 72-hole stroke play event will be played tomorrow through Sunday. Each nation is represented by a three-man team, with the two lowest scores counting towards the team total each day.
It is the first major international competition for Barnes since winning the 2002 U.S. Amateur Championship on Aug. 25. The senior from Stockton, Calif., has a team-leading 72.33 stroke average in three appearances this season with the University of Arizona, including two top-three finishes. Barnes is joined on Team USA by Hunter Mahan and D.J. Trahan.
The four-day event will be contested over two different courses at Saujana Golf & Country Club. The Palm Course is a par 72, 6,937-yard layout, while the Bunga Ray Course is a par 72, 6,739-yard layout. Barnes is scheduled to begin play tomorrow at 9 a.m. on the Palm Course.
Barnes is the sixth Wildcat men's golfer to compete in the World Amateur Team Championship. Additionally, Wildcat women's golfer Laura Myerscough competed in the 2002 Women's World Amateur Team Championship Oct. 16 - Oct. 19, helping the United States to a fifth-pace finish at the same location. Her four-round 297 (+5) tied her for 21st place individually.
Sponsored by the World Amateur Golf Council, which comprises national governing bodies of golf in more than 90 countries, the World Amateur Team Championship is a biennial international amateur golf competition which is rotated among three geographic zones: Australasian, American, and European-African.
