Trees, grass and cold.
A trio of elements that most Arizonans are not accustomed to will be part of what the Arizona soccer team (5-7-1) faces this weekend in a trip to the Oregon schools.
Tonight, the Wildcats, who are 0-3-0 in the Pacific 10 Conference after dropping two to the ranked Los Angeles schools, will play at Pape Field, a venue that boasts the second-highest attendance average in the Pac-10 at 778 people a game to support their Ducks, despite a 1-10-2 (0-3-1) record.
On Sunday, UA will take their traveling show to Corvallis to play Oregon State.
"Playing on the road is always difficult with a young team," head coach Cathy Klein said. "We were predicted to finish last in the Pac-10, so we're still the underdogs and we use that as fuel."
Oregon quacked out last weekend, falling to then-No. 10 Cal 2-0 and 3-0 to then-No. 1 Stanford on the road. Ducks senior captain Sarah Peters is also their three-year starting goalkeeper. She ranks first in the conference in save average with 5.69 a game, and second in total saves with 75.
UO's only win of the season came against Wisconsin-Green Bay 4-2 on Sept. 22 in the Nike Tournament at Oregon State. The offensive production has nosedived since, producing only five other goals all season, while the defense has allowed 30.
Last season, UA recorded its first victory against Oregon in a series that stands at 3-1-1 in the 33rd state's favor. The Wildcats came back and won 2-1 in Tucson on a day which saw sophomore Candice Wilks record a game-winning goal and an assist. Wilks feels the intensity from last year will be present this year.
"Of course it will carry over," Wilks said. "We don't want them to think it was a fluke. We have to prove how good we really are."
The Beavers are 7-6-2 (0-4-0 Pac-10) and trying rise above .500 in Corvallis. The series with the Beavers is tied at 3-3-1 after last year's barnburner in Tucson saw the Wildcats scratch away a 2-1 victory in overtime.
It only took one minute of overtime for UA to pull out the golden goal off the foot of Wilks after Arizona came back from a 1-0 second-half deficit.
"Hopefully, we won't need those many chances to win," Wilks said, referring to overtime.
Last weekend, OSU was downed by the Bay Area schools, 2-0 against Stanford and 3-1 against Cal. The Beavers are still the first team to score on the Golden Bears in five outings; but despite that, ladies from Corvallis have walked to the locker room with a loss five of their last six contests, beating only New Mexico on Oct. 4 by a tally of 5-2.
"I think we can hang with them," said freshman Erin Clewett, who is tied for the team lead in assists with four. "We have to capitalize on them and make no mistakes."
"We're playing well; we're weathering the storms," Klein said. "We have good players in key positions."
"We are turning things around," freshman Kelly Nelson said. "It's time to make an impact."
