The UA men's water polo team will look to make waves this weekend when it holds the Southwest Conference Tournament.
The tournament stakes will be an automatic bid to the national tournament at Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo.
The Wildcats (9-0) are currently ranked tied with Oregon State University at No. 7 in the national polls. Junior Anthony Delorenzo captains the Southwestern Conference-leading Wildcats, aided by strong support around him.
As of last week, Arizona boasted a lineup that included three Southwestern Players of the Week ÷ senior Kris Souther, Delorenzo and freshman Jeff Dunnam.
For Dunnam, the award came in his collegiate debut, when he scored 19 goals in his first four games as a Wildcat, including a win over heavily favored Air Force Academy.
Recently, Arizona solidified its status in the Southwest Conference when it knocked off rival Colorado by a score of 23-6 on Oct. 13. The previous day, Arizona buried Colorado State by a resounding score of 34-5. The 34 points set the UA single-game scoring record. Delorenzo notched 25 goals in the weekend tournament including an unprecedented 12 against Colorado State.
"I got a call from the commissioner accusing us of running up the score on Colorado State, which is completely untrue," head coach Sean Devlin said. "We have just been crushing teams left and right."
Arizona is averaging 20 goals a game.
"We are so fast we don't rely on a set offense anymore. We use an aggressive press and a brutal counter-attack, forcing the other team into mistakes," Devlin said.
So far, the attack has paid huge dividends.
Arizona will be seeded No. 1 in this weekend's Southwestern Tournament. Their first game will be Saturday at 10 a.m. against Colorado State. That afternoon at 4:30 p.m. the Wildcats will take on Utah State. On Sunday, the Wildcats will play Utah at 10:20 a.m. The tournament will conclude at 3:30 that afternoon with the championship game. All games will be held at the Student Recreation Center, 1400 E. Sixth St.
