Lopez Îa keeper' for TUSD Board

Kendrick Wilson's attempt to make endorsements for the Tucson Unified School District Board in his Oct. 31 column "Time to clean up the TUSD Board" did a disservice to the UA community and voters ÷ not because Wilson jumps on a bandwagon to attack me, but because the piece was so full of errors.

Those mistakes began in Wilson's first sentence, "TUSD Governing Board does not directly affect UA students." It most certainly does. TUSD schools produce many of Wilson's classmates. TUSD produces many of the UA Îs athletes. TUSD employs many UA graduates. Many of them continue their education at the UA. And I have cast many a vote for a UA grad. The TUSD Board determines spending for the second largest school system in Arizona and thus is responsible for the property and sales taxes Wilson's professors, UA families, and indeed Wilson himself, pay. In relation to what we've done with our money, Wilson makes another mistake. At a meeting on the TUSD budget this summer, I moved for immediate raises for teachers and staff. The motion was shot down. [Read article]

Vote for you, UA, Arizona tomorrow

Nov. 5, 2002 has been the day we've all been waiting for and Arizona's future is on the line.

For Arizona residents, this election cycle will hopefully place a governor in office who will effectively pull our state from the downward-spiraling budget crisis.

A just and decisive leader is desperately needed in our state capitol ÷ one who will head the Legislature in creating a climate that can stimulate business growth and attract new industries, offer bold solutions to repair the public education system and guide the future of Arizona's healthcare system. The visions of Independent Dick Mahoney, Democrat Janet Napolitano and Republican Matt Salmon would have vastly different consequenses. [Read article]

Calling all Libertarians: We need your help

These days, it would seem that the most politically incorrect thing a politician can be is a religious family man.

As an economic conservative and social moderate, I suppose I can understand.

I do identify more with Libertarians on certain issues than I do my fellow Republicans ÷ particularly on an economic level, where I've been very critical of my party for wimping out.

I mean really, a paltry $1.35 trillion tax cut over ten years? If Ronald Reagan were still coherent, he'd be embarrassed for all us fiscal right-wingers. [Read article]

photo Napolitano best leader for Arizona

This year, the race for governor presents us with two very different candidates and a clear choice. Janet Napolitano is the best candidate, one who brings people together and represents the moderate voices in Arizona.

Salmon too extreme

Salmon gives mainstream conservatives and Republicans a bad name.

Not all Republicans are against abortion under any circumstances. Not all conservatives are against gun safety. And not all Republicans are members of the religious right. [Read article]
