Nobody said getting to the Final Four was going to be easy, and Arizona got all it could handle from Texas in the second round of the NCAA volleyball tournament.

The Longhorns were one game away from pulling the upset, but head coach David Rubio rallied the Wildcats, and they came back to win 3-2 (30-25, 25-30, 18-30, 15-9) to advance to its fourth-consecutive Sweet 16.

"We are very excited about winning a very hard fought match," Rubio said. "Texas played a great match. They did a nice job tactically against us, but it is nice to move on to the round of 16. We are really excited about that." [Read article]

Game Recap: SDSU's rowdy crowd makes for interesting times

SAN DIEGO ÷ In the past, San Diego State basketball games used to be a good place to get some homework done, take a quick nap or catch up with an old friend over a cold one; but Saturday night, Cox Arena was out of control.

Fans came early, stayed late after the game, and showed that the students at SDSU care about more than just surfing and partying.

"This was the greatest crowd ever and it was fantastic," said Bill Walton, who announced the game that his two sons were a part of. "I'm so proud." [Read article]

Game Analysis: Wildcats trounce Aztecs

SAN DIEGO ö For the first time this season the No. 1 Wildcats' final score had the same first numeral as their opponent's, as they fended off San Diego State 89-81.

This was the first time this season Arizona took to the road and to the Cox Arena. The venue was sold out for the first time in history, and it proved to be a hostile place to play.

"We were pumped for this game," said senior Rick Anderson, who put up 17 points and 10 rebounds. "We made some careless mistakes that kept them in the game, we could've blown them out." [Read article]

It definitely wasn't the best basketball the Wildcats have played all year, but they did what they wanted to get done.

Arizona won the 2002 Fiesta Bowl Women's Basketball Classic this weekend with two wins. This was the sixth time in the last eight years that the Wildcats have won their own tournament, but it was the outcome of last year's tournament that made this one that much more enjoyable. [Read article]

Commentary: Sky's the limit for young Wildcats

When the season started, sophomore Dee-Dee Wheeler said her outlook for the season was a secret. As if she and the team knew something we, and the rest of the nation didn't.

The secret was that Arizona women's basketball has arrived, and there are no signs that it will be leaving anytime soon.

People across the country know Arizona is a basketball school, though many of the visions associated with Arizona basketball have to do with Lute Olson and the men's team. [Read article]

photo Icecats finish semester with split

After a promising start to the weekend, the No. 6 Arizona Icecats had to settle for a split in their weekend series with No. 18 Arizona State.

The highly anticipated series was all it was billed to be, as both games were riddled with explosive offense and hard-hitting defense, with the occasional bit of controversy laced in as well.

The Icecats took Friday night's game by a score of 7-3, paced by senior captain Dave Loftus' two first-period goals. [Read article]
