UAPD arrested a California man for driving with a suspended license and registration Monday in a parking lot at the corner of East Sixth Street and North Campbell Avenue, reports stated.
An officer was dispatched to the area after a UA student called police at 11:50 a.m. and said that a white van with front-end damage "came roaring down Helen" onto North Campbell Avenue, nearly hitting his vehicle. The student said that the driver of the vehicle threw a purse out the window near East Speedway Boulevard and then continued southbound on North Campbell Avenue until he pulled into a parking lot south of the football practice field with a flat tire, reports stated.
Tucson Police dispatch notified UAPD that it had received witness reports of a white van with California plates allegedly striking two vehicles and a fire hydrant near University Medical Center, reports stated. TPD dispatch noted that that van also had front-end damage.
When the UA officer arrived at the parking lot, he reportedly found a van parked in an alley behind the practice field. It was parked under a large tree, behind a shed and a rollaway dumpster in an apparent attempt to conceal it, reports stated.
A man fitting the description given to UAPD was inspecting what appeared to be a flat tire with a damaged rim. The officer asked the man if he was alone and he said, "Yes, it's just me and my dog." The dog was identified as a young pit bull, according to reports.
The man identified himself and said that he had pulled into the lot to check his tire because he heard it making noise after it accidentally ran over a curb, reports stated.
The officer asked why the man parked behind the shed and the man said he wanted to stay out of the way of traffic; the officer observed that the lot was empty except for three UA vans. The officer also observed that the suspected van had red paint transfers and considerable damage to the front right panel, reports stated.
When the officer asked about the damage, the man said that a tractor-trailer backed into him three days ago, reports stated. The officer placed the man in handcuffs, and after running his license and plate number, discovered that his license plates had been revoked, reports stated.
TPD dispatched a wrecker and an animal-control officer to the scene. UA security officers could not locate the purse, reports stated.
A man was arrested for shoplifting at the Student Union Memorial Center on Monday at 9:49 a.m.
A female employee of Java Jive Coffee informed UA dispatch that a white male with a gray beard and gray jacket had stolen some coffee and was outside panhandling, reports stated.
An officer saw a man who matched the description sitting under the patio on the east side of the union, drinking a small cup of coffee, reports stated.
The officer approached the man after the employee properly identified him and placed him in handcuffs. The officer observed that the coffee cup was halfway full of warm coffee. When he asked the man where he got it, he said that he had paid 65 cents for it in the union and, on the way out, had spilled it and went back for more, reports stated.
The employee informed the police that she wanted to prosecute, reports stated.
Dispatch informed the officer that the man was also wanted by Tucson Police for failing to appear for a prior shoplifting charge.
When the officer arrested the man, the man said, "I'll sue! I'll sue!" The officer placed the man in the patrol car and took him to Pima County Corrections, reports stated.
An older man was arrested for drinking in public and false reporting to a police officer outside the Arizona/Sonora Residence Hall at 10:34 p.m. on Monday, reports stated.
Police responded to reports of an unwanted intoxicated person hanging around the volleyball courts, harassing students. The responding officer observed a man in a jacket and a cowboy hat, who appeared to be intoxicated. The man was concealing a half-full beer can under his jacket, reports stated.
After searching the man, the officer took an ID card he found and ran the man's name for any warrants. The check revealed that the man had a warrant from the TPD. The man was arrested and taken to Pima County Jail.
A UAPD officer found a bag containing 23 unopened beer cans while performing a security check in the Tyndall Garage on Monday, reports stated.
The officer found the beer inside a large green paper bag resting against a concrete pillar on the first level, reports stated.
The officer threw the bag and its contents into a trashcan near the police station on 1852 E. First Street, reports stated.
The next day, around 9:42 a.m., the officer discovered that the same bag had been taken out of the trash and left in front of the station entrance. The contents of the bag had not been removed. The officer took the beer and poured it down the sink, reports stated.
