The Arizona men's tennis team was displeased with its low ranking to begin the spring season and decided to do something about it.

The 62nd-ranked Wildcats hit the road this past weekend with their first opportunity to prove to the country that they are a lot better then their pre-season rank.

The task that lay ahead of them was to defeat No. 31 San Diego State and No. 48 San Diego.

Both matches went to the finish, but the Wildcats were able to pull both upsets.

The Wildcats defeated both the Aztecs and the Toreros 4-3 to earn two victories on their first road trip of the season.

The Wildcats are the first team to defeat the Toreros this season.

In singles action against USD, the Wildcats took four of six matches with junior Whi Kim leading the way in the No. 1 slot with wins of 6-3, 6-4.

In the No. 4 position, sophomore Colin O'Grady won in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, and in the fifth slot freshman Daniel Andrus won in straight sets 6-5, 6-4.The Wildcats also took the No. 6 slot with Roger Matalonga taking it 6-1, 6-0.

The doubles action was taken by the Toreros in two of three matches.

The only Arizona doubles team to win was the No. 3 slot of O'Grady and Matalonga by a score of 8-4.

This Saturday the Wildcats begin a three-match stretch of playing at home, beginning with No. 72 BYU at noon on Saturday and UCSB on Sunday, also at noon.

Two Wildcats in top five at PING-Arizona tournament

After 45 minutes of frost delay on the course, the first round of play today in the 2003 PING-Arizona Intercollegiate Tournament held at Arizona International Course finally got underway.

The delay did cause play to be suspended due to darkness with two-thirds of the field still with a hole to finish, but the Wildcats have lit up the leaderboard, placing two in the top 5 individually, and as a team, Arizona is second.

Senior Reid Hatley is tied for the lead at six under, while teammate junior Chris Nallen is two strokes back at four under par, good for a fifth place tie.

Play will resume tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. with the completion of the second round.

The final round will immediately follow at approximately 9:15 a.m On Jan. 29 Andrew Medley joined the team after transferring from Mississippi. After playing for three seasons as a Rebel, Medley earned an average of 73.45 that included two top-ten finishes. Medley is currently tied with six others in 41st with a score of two over par.
