No. 1 UA, led by Channing Frye's 25 points and 14 boards, dropped USC by 27 on Saturday, just two days after punishing UCLA by 36

Winning has not been much of a problem for the No. 1 Arizona Wildcats so far this season, but winning in back-to-back games had been rare until this weekend.

After cruising to victory over UCLA last Thursday, the Wildcats finally put together a solid weekend of play as they scorched Southern California 86-59 in front of 14, 584 spectators at the McKale Center. [Read article]

Game Analysis: Channing dominates down low

No one is ever going to mistake Channing Frye for a football player.

Standing at 6 foot 10 inches and weighing just 235 pounds, the UA sophomore has been called everything in the book, from a gentle giant to just plain soft since his arrival at Arizona less than two years ago.

But on Saturday afternoon, associate head coach Jim Rosborough described the new Frye best.

"(Frye was) really darn tough," Rosborough said. [Read article]

Fatal shooting spoils Wildcats' L.A. trip

No. 23 Arizona splits in L.A. after witnessing deadly shootout near Beverly Hills area bank

Watching a scary movie is one thing. Witnessing an actual shooting before a game is entirely different.

While driving down Wilshire Boulevard on the way to the game with UCLA Friday night, the UA women's basketball team was witness to the final stages of a bank robbery.

As the team's bus passed the Washington National bank, players saw several police officers enter the bank with guns drawn. The team would later find out that a police shoot-out ensued and one of the two bank robbery suspects was killed, while the other escaped and is still at large. [Read article]

Wildcats drop Arkasas 9-1 after five-inning mercy rule

Five innings is all it took for No. 2 Arizona to run over Arkansas in the Arizona Pepsi Softball Classic yesterday.

The mercy rule was implemented after the Wildcats earned an eight-run lead, beating the Razorbacks 9-1.

Arizona improved to 13-1, losing its only game against the University of Texas last weekend.

"There were bright spots," UA head coach Mike Candrea said. "The short game was good and we drove in runs. It's time to get back to work." [Read article]

No. 2 Utah runs its winning streak over No. 13 Arizona to 48 straight

Chalk up another victory for the Utes.

The dominance of the No. 2 Utah gymnastics program against Arizona continued Friday night as the Utes (4-2) made it 48 straight victories over the Gymcats.

"They're good and for the first time in awhile they're healthy," UA head coach Bill Ryden said. "They're a really talented team. I think we can be in the game with our best lineup. We're just going to have to wait a little while for that to happen." [Read article]

photo Wildcats sink Sun Devils in dramatic fashion

As the shadows began to set in upon the pool deck of the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon, it seemed as if once again the Arizona men's swim and dive team would fall short of victory.

The men trailed in-state rival No. 13 Arizona State by 20 points with only two events remaining.

The comeback started with a sweep of the top three places in the 200-yard individual medley, as freshman Dave Rollins finished first, followed by junior Juan Veloz in second and senior Jeff Dash in third place. [Read article]

photo Oregon gives tennis first loss of season

With almost three weeks between matches and a week of no practice due to recent heavy rain, the Arizona women's tennis team faced the tough challenge of beginning its Pacific 10 Conference season a bit rusty.

The rust was apparent.

The No. 16 Wildcats (2-1 overall, 0-1 Pac-10) were upset 3-4 by Oregon, marking the first loss of the season for the UA.

Arizona's match with Oregon was scheduled for Friday, but because of rain, it was postponed until Sunday. [Read article]

Track fields mixed results at NAU

The indoor regular season came to a close this weekend for UA track and field, and despite dropping two meets to rival Arizona State, strong performances have the Wildcats feeling confident heading into next week's conference championships.

Although the men's and women's squads both lost to ASU at the Northern Arizona Double Dual meet, Friday was a day that saw several Arizona athletes achieve both personal and school bests. Both squads managed to split the weekend meet, losing to ASU and beating the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona University. The men ran away with victory over NAU 94-56, but fell short to the Sun Devils, 75-74. The women defeated NAU 79-59 while losing to ASU 79-55. [Read article]

UA pitchers baffle Anteaters in series sweep

Arizona junior Moises Duran hit his third career grand slam and Richie Gardner continued the pitching staff's dominance over UC Irvine as the Wildcats completed the series sweep with a 7-1 road win yesterday.

Gardner threw 7.1 innings for his second win of the season, striking out six and walking four. The one run marked the only time Irvine (2-5) scored in the three-game set.

With Arizona (6-3) in its first hole of the weekend at 1-0 in the third inning, Duran knocked Anteater righty Michael Koehler's offering over the left-field wall to clear the bases and take the team lead with his third homer of the season. [Read article]
