Arizona junior Moises Duran hit his third career grand slam and Richie Gardner continued the pitching staff's dominance over UC Irvine as the Wildcats completed the series sweep with a 7-1 road win yesterday.
Gardner threw 7.1 innings for his second win of the season, striking out six and walking four. The one run marked the only time Irvine (2-5) scored in the three-game set.
With Arizona (6-3) in its first hole of the weekend at 1-0 in the third inning, Duran knocked Anteater righty Michael Koehler's offering over the left-field wall to clear the bases and take the team lead with his third homer of the season.
Sophomore Jeff Van Houten led the Wildcat offense, hitting 3-for-4 and scoring two runs. Freshmen Derek Decatur and Trevor Crowe had two hits apiece, while junior Brian Anderson and sophomore Pat Reilly each posted an RBI.
Saturday, junior Sean Rierson (1-0) turned things around after a shaky first two starts, hurling a complete-game, two-hit shutout for his first win. Crowe and Anderson each batted 3-for-5, and Van Houten had two hits in the game.
Friday's series opener saw junior Joe Little (2-1) fan 11 in seven innings of 3-hit ball. Freshman reliever John Meloan tossed two hitless innings to secure the shutout.
The Wildcats return to the friendly confines of Sancet Field for a weekend series against Minnesota, followed by a Monday contest with Oklahoma State.
