Wildcat welcome: Where to find the free stuff

By Jill Holt
Arizona Summer Wildcat
Monday August 25, 2003

While students may be breaking the bank trying to pay for books, tuition, and the like, the Wildcat Welcome staff is providing loads of free food, entertainment and fun for everyone on campus.

Here's a guide to the best freebie finds of the week for those who might want to find that cold, fruity flavor of a free Eegee's smoothie while they stand in the mile-long line at the Financial Aid office.

Today:

11 a.m. ÷ 1 p.m. Monday Madness on the Mall. You can score some free Eegee's or play tabletop football for free T-shirts at the event, sponsored by Campus Recreation.

6 p.m. ÷ 9 p.m Wildcat Night at the Student Recreation Center. You can join one of the 38 different sports clubs on campus. And the first 400 people through the door get a special prize!

Tuesday:

11 a.m. ÷ 2 p.m. Community Day Open House on the Mall. Come see what local businesses and organizations have to offer, and enjoy a free massage and live entertainment.

11 a.m. ÷ 1 p.m. on the mall. "Drums Across Cultures." The Department of Multicultural Programs and Services is sponsoring this celebration of diversity, which features drumming from around the world. They will also be serving free Eegee's.

7:30 p.m. Gaze at the Stars at Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium. Stop by for a free planetarium show, "Explorers of Mauna Kea." Space is limited to the first 126 students who arrive.

Wednesday:

10 a.m. ÷ 2 p.m. on the Mall. Back to School Blitz. You can purchase a ZonaZoo Sports Pass and enjoy some free pizza, music and giveaways.

Thursday:

10 a.m. ÷ 2 p.m. Back to School Blitz. Just in case you missed out on the free pizza the day before.

Noon ÷ 1 p.m. Bear Down Ice Cream Bash on the Mall. Beat the heat with free ice cream for as long as it lasts!

Friday:

6 p.m. in Centennial Hall. CATFEST. Come rock out at this traditional free concert put on by ASUA and UAB. The headliner this year is local favorite Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers.
