WEEKEND SPORTS UPDATE:
Beavers gnaw at Cats for 6-point upset

photo Arizona can't complete sweep at Oregon schools

In January, Oregon State lost by 34 in Tucson. What a difference a month makes.

The Beavers pulled off the upset over No. 14 Arizona 90-84 in Corvallis, Ore., leaving the Wildcats with a losing road record for the season, as they fall to 17-7 overall and 9-6 in Pac 10 play.

After averaging close to 30 points over the last four games, Wildcats shooting guard Salim Stoudamire scored 12 points in the loss. He sat out much of the first half after committing two fouls in the game's first 4 minutes.

The Beavers' win marks the first time Oregon State head coach Jay John, a former UA assistant coach, has beaten his old team.

Med Tech on the chopping block

photo Through a back door at UMC sits a drugstore-sized laboratory cluttered with computers, microscopes and centrifuges. Technologists hunched over the equipment examine blood samples and interpret computer printouts. Their task: making sure patients are diagnosed and treated properly.

If you're being treated at the hospital, you won't see the lab or these technologists. But if you've had blood drawn, a urine sample taken or other tests run, they may figure out what's wrong with you. [Read article]

It ain't over till the fat lady sings. But for most UA students, "it," the experience of opera, has yet to begin.

However, "La Canterina" or "The Budding Soprano," a short comedic opera by Joseph Haydn, offers a perfect introduction to the world of opera. [Read article]

Live Culture

For more than a decade, the UA has been a "weapons-free" campus.

But buried beneath Bear Down Gym are the signs of a tradition that has gone on at the UA for far longer.

Beneath the students playing basketball and lifting weights is a shooting range built in 1926, the year the UA signed a contract with ROTC as part of its land grant mission. [Read article]
