Cats muster just three hits in 4-0 loss in Tempe

The UA baseball team fell to No. 7 Arizona State 4-0 in Tempe last night, stretching its winless streak to five games.

The No. 16 Wildcats (5-4-1) mustered just three hits against a pair of ASU pitchers. The Sun Devils (9-2) scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings.

Arizona junior second baseman John Hardy went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, while senior third baseman Moises Duran provided the only other Wildcat hit with a single in the fourth inning.

ASU first baseman Joe Persichina opened the scoring with a two-out single in the bottom of the first to plate a pair of Sun Devils. In the second, a groundout by right fielder Travis Buck scored second baseman Nick Walsh, and a two-out base hit by left fielder Jeff Larish scored shortstop Justin Pedroia to give the Devils a 4-0 lead.

Sophomore starting pitcher Kevin Guyette (1-2) picked up the loss for the Wildcats. Guyette lasted just two innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits while walking four.

Brett Bordes (1-0) earned the win for the Sun Devils, surrendering just three hits while striking out 10 in 6 innings. Pat Bresnehan pitched a hitless final three innings for ASU to pick up his first save of the season.

After opening the season 5-0, the Wildcats have failed to notch a victory in their last five contests. Arizona lost the final game of a three-game series to Cal State Fullerton and went 0-2-1 against UC Irvine last weekend.

Arizona travels to Waco, Texas, Friday for game one of a three-game set against the Baylor Bears. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
