The women's tennis team played their first match in two weeks and its made it count, defeating No. 25 Arizona State 5-2 in Tempe.

The No. 40 Wildcats gained confidence from the start after winning two of three doubles matches. That set the stage for singles play, in which Arizona won four of six matches.

"It felt great," said assistant coach Petar Danolic. "We really needed this win. Hopefully, this will give us a little momentum going into next weekend."

Juniors Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands teamed up to win their doubles match 8-5 over Lauren Colalillo and Kady Pooler, keeping them undefeated this season.

"We enjoy playing together," Hollands said. "I've never had this much fun playing doubles in my life."

"They match up very well," Danolic said. "They like playing with each other, and they're both playing well in both singles and doubles. They're two of the best players in the country, so it's not surprising they've done well so far."

Mlakar and Hollands also took care of business in their singles matches, beating ASU's Joslynn Burkett and Wendy Pilecka, respectively. Senior Debbie Larocque closed out the match with her 6-3, 6-4 win over Vana Tomas.

"We were really excited going into the match," Hollands said.

She went on to say that although the team doesn't look at the rankings, it felt good to beat a higher-ranked opponent.

The doubles team of freshman Jessie Rochefort and sophomore Iza Ferreira won in the No. 3 doubles position over Burkett and Sabrina Capannolo. Rochefort won her singles match, beating Cindy Sureephong 6-1, 7-6. Freshman Kasia Jakowlew fell to Capannolo 6-1, 6-0 in her singles debut.

The Wildcats' next match is Friday at home against No. 9 California.
