photo Students ticketed in garages for late nights

Students who spend late nights studying at the library may find a ticket on their car if they are parked in one of the garages on campus between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. without a permit.

Even though the rule has been in effect since last year, students such as Tory Tebbutt, a media arts sophomore, are not aware of it.

"When the entire school population is not aware of parking in the garages between those hours, it is not fair," Tebbutt said. "The garage is there to park in and the library is open all hours; there's just no logic." [Read article]

32 kicked out of dorms in fall

A student living in Navajo Residence Hall was arrested by UAPD last week for having multiple illegal drugs in his dorm with the intention of selling them.

Police found 3 ounces of marijuana, 221 prescription pills, 1.2 ounces of cocaine and various drug paraphernalia in Patrick Jameson Madden's room.

In addition to criminal charges, Madden, a pre-business freshman, also faces the possibility of being evicted from the residence hall. [Read article]

Regents want aid, legislators say no funds

More state support for financial aid would help keep universities affordable, UA administrators and regents say, but some legislators warn the money isn't likely to come soon.

Still, lobbying lawmakers to increase the amount of financial aid coming directly from taxpayers plays a prominent role in a preliminary proposal asking the Legislature to reconsider how it funds universities.

In the draft regents will discuss this week, the universities call for an increased taxpayer contribution to a fund that generates about $1 million per year in aid for UA students. [Read article]

Will extend to UMC via Park Ave., Second St.

In addition to bikes, CatTrans and pedestrians on cell phones, students may also have to dodge trolleys in order to get to classes in the Harvill building.

Under a proposal being entertained by the city, Old Pueblo Trolley, which currently runs from North University Boulevard down to East Fourth Avenue, would expand its services to link downtown Tucson to the Arizona Health Sciences Center. [Read article]

She was 18.

Rubin leaves behind many friends at the UA who are still coping with her surprising death.

Samantha Sistek, an accounting junior and a roommate of Rubin, described Rubin as being the happiest person on the planet.

"She was a great student and really involved. She was planning on volunteering at a hospice," Sistek said. [Read article]

On the spot

Freshman thinks Stanford's mascot is terrible and dreams of becoming a champion

Wildcat: Hi, I'm Claire from the Wildcat and you're on the spot.

Pace: OK, that's cool.

Wildcat: What do you think of Stanford's mascot, the Cardinal?

Pace: I think it's terrible. It's just a tree.

Wildcat: Walking around and pretending to be a tree would have to be the worst job in the world. [Read article]

Things you always never wanted to know

  • The Chinese city of Chinkiang, now 150 miles inland, was once a seaport. The land has been extended because of silt deposits from the Yangtze River.

  • The chick of the mallee bird never knows either of its parents. As soon as it burrows out of the mound in which its mother built her nest, the chick is able to fly and is left entirely on its own. No mother mallee has ever been seen with a brood. [Read article]

    March 8, 1968

This is yet another example of a lost UA tradition.

"Lisa Baker, Playboy Magazine's Playmate of the Year, is helped into a waiting automobile at the Tucson airport after her arrival here yesterday afternoon to take part in the annual ÎUgly Man' contest."

"As in the past years, the winner of the contest will escort a Playboy Playmate · out to dinner following the Beauty and the Beast Ball Friday night, which will climax the contest." [Read article]
