Poetry Center opens the mic at Club Congress

The Poetry Center invites all local poets of every age, race and creed to attend its Second Annual Poetry Open Mic tomorrow night at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Curious locals are encouraged to wander in. The event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Readers will get a five-minute reading slot and are encouraged to sign up by 6 p.m. to participate.

"Last year, there were 100 people that came. It was a standing-room only event, and not everyone got a chance to read," said creative writing senior Mia McDonald, who is hosting the event.

One of the event's purposes is to unite two groups of people that may have been alienated from each other in the past. "We really wanted to start to reach out to the entire poetry community in Tucson, and not just the academic community at the university," McDonald said.

Lemonade will be served.

"It's a really good opportunity to share your work with a lot of other aspiring writers. And there's going to be a DJ afterwards, so you can party after," McDonald said. "And it's completely free."

For more information, call McDonald at 991-9324.
