The UA club lacrosse team lost 11-1 to UC Santa Barbara in yesterday's long-awaited WCLL finals rematch between the two teams.

After defeating Sonoma State 8-5 Saturday in the penultimate round of the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League Championships, the Laxcats sat and waited while Cal Poly and UCSB duked it out in the day's other semifinal match. Santa Barbara scored two unanswered goals in overtime to squeeze by,

setting up a long-awaited rematch with the Laxcats yesterday.

But for Arizona, the wait wasn't worth it. The Laxcats never found their footing after falling behind early, losing 11-1 to the Gauchos in Los Angeles.

The loss snaps Arizona's 11-game winning streak, its longest this century. The Laxcats (14-4) travel to St. Louis next week for the opening round of the United States Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates Championships.

"We're pretty disappointed, but we needed a good wake-up call before St. Louis," Arizona head coach Kenny Broschart said.

Junior midfielder Steve Luna scored the Laxcats' lone goal in a game punctuated by underwhelming performances. Santa Barbara (20-1) held Arizona's three-pronged attack of Adam Paris, Greg Polheber and Jeems Lochridge scoreless for the first time this season, while handing the team its worst margin of defeat since April 2003.

Junior midfielder Dave Sherman added an assist for the Laxcats, who missed out on their first WCLL title since 1990.

"We never gave up, and we showed a lot of heart before the game was over," Broschart said.

The loss to the Gauchos came in only the second game for Broschart after being named the WCLL's 2004 Coach of the Year April 26. The first-year head coach led Arizona to a 6-1 conference mark during the regular season, with a 12-3 overall record.

Paris scored three goals in the Laxcats' victory over the Seawolves (15-3). Senior midfielder M.J. Crickmore also notched a hat trick for Sonoma State, which was held to its lowest point total since also losing 8-5 Feb. 21 to Santa Barbara.

"Charlie Salemi played a great net," Broschart said. "We played good on defense."

The USLIA will announce its seedings for the championships tonight at 10 p.m. on its official Web site, uslia.com. The 16-team tournament runs May 11-15.

Joining Broschart in receiving WCLL honors were junior longstick midfielder Tim McComb (first-team WCLL), midfielder Lochridge and defenseman Tom Wiley (second-team), as well as attackman Paris (third-team).
