If you go to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, anytime soon, be mindful of who you pick a fight with. Especially from July 22-25.

During those days, UA student Dusty Alexander and UA alums Rick Bueno and Steve McDonald are just three of the many athletes who will compete at the 2004 International Jiu-Jitsu World Championship.

The three athletes are in the process of raising the $4,000 needed for their trip. Sponsors who have contributed to their fund include "a lot of car dealerships, small private company owners and regular people," said Alexander. [Read article]

76ers take Iguodala with ninth-round pick

The Philadelphia 76ers picked up another A.I., former Arizona basketball player Andre Iguodala, who is excited to team up with Allen Iverson.

The Sixers selected Iguodala with the ninth choice in the NBA Draft last week. The pick is the highest draft position for an Arizona player since Mike Bibby was taken second in 1998 by the Vancouver Grizzlies.

"I'm just happy to be here, I'm real excited," said Iguodala in a press conference on Friday. "(Thursday) in the draft I was real anxious to hear my name called. I hoped to get called a little earlier but through this whole process I've been thinking, this is the place where I would like to be and that this is a team used to winning." [Read article]

In college she was the ideal student athlete. It didn't take long for Wendy Allen to move to the front of pro softball's class.

Allen, a first baseman/third baseman/designated player for the Arizona Heat (9-13), has become one of the National Pro Fastpitch's top hitters after earning academic and athletic All-American honors as a collegian in 2004. [Read article]

Wildcats compete at U.S. Track and Field Junior Championships

After standout freshman campaigns, Daniel Marshall and Jarred Sola represented Arizona Track and Field at the United States Junior Track and Field Championships at Texas A&M, finishing in the top 11.

Marshall finished ninth in the triple jump while Sola finished 11th in the shot put.

Marshall qualified for the final with a jump of 15.16 meters. Sola did not qualify for the final after his second and third attempts were foul. The first went a distance of 16.65 meters. [Read article]
