While dreaming of getting the perfect job after graduation, many UA students all over the country and around the world are undertaking exciting internships this summer.

Most internships are found through campus interviews, Wildcat JobLink, Career Fairs, hundreds of internship listing Web sites, academic departments and directly through employer Web sites, according to Jack Perry, senior coordinator at Career Services. [Read article]

Department budgets to be reduced

The rising cost of employee benefits has prompted UA administrators to, for the third time in four years, ask colleges to cut their budgets.

The 2.06 percent cuts that President Peter Likins is asking each department to make will total $6.2 million, half of the budget deficit. The other half will be paid for by the university's marginal revenue increases from increased enrollment and tuition.

The state Legislature gave the UA $4.3 million to retain key personnel, but failed to give money for the increased cost of health, dental, life and disability insurance, said Richard Roberts, budget director. [Read article]

Mt. Graham goes up in smoke

The week-old wildfires on Mount Graham rage on, but the $200 million UA observatory on the mountain may stay safe, even though the fire is less than a mile away.

The Gibson (started by lightning on June 22) and Nuttall (started by lightning on June 26) fires are 10 percent contained, according to a representative at the Nuttall Fire Complex, but they are moving ever closer to the small towns of Columbine and Turkey Flats, as well as the observatory. UA's Von Hoff to serve on U.S. cancer board

President Bush may have declined speaking at the UA commencement ceremony, but he is recognizing UA accomplishments in other ways.

Bush recently announced his intention to appoint the UA's Dr. Daniel Von Hoff to the National Cancer Advisory Board for a six-year term expiring Mar. 9, 2010.

Von Hoff is a molecular and cellular biology professor at the graduate and medical school level. He is also the director of the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center Cancer Therapeutics Program. [Read article]
