Sophomore quarterback blames comments on lack of communication

Arizona sophomore quarterback Nic Costa said he and quarterbacks coach Jeff Hecklinski "got some things resolved and talked about a few things" after Costa voiced his displeasure with the team's lack of communication to The Arizona Daily Star on Monday.

Costa told the Star, "I just want (head coach John Mackovic) to tell me what he is thinking, what he's feeling and why they made the decision they've made. Whether I agree with it or not, I just want some resolution."

After starting the Wildcats' first three games of the season and taking about half of the snaps, Costa saw his playing time diminish to just two series in Arizona's 59-7 loss to Purdue.

Following Tuesday night's practice, Costa said the issue had been resolved and everyone was just looking to put it behind them.

"It was just a miscommunication on both of our parts," he said. "We should have never gotten to that. Things are resolved."

Costa said he had not spoken to Mackovic about the concerns as of last night, but he had talked with Hecklinski. Both agreed it was all just poor communication from all parties involved.

"Coach (Mackovic) thought someone took care of it and things just didn't happen," Costa said. "It was just a miscommunication on all of our parts and it won't happen again."

When told about Costa's comments about the lack of communication on Monday, Mackovic said that he would "do a better job" of communicating in the future.

"There hasn't been too much communication (between Mackovic and Costa) because I think he's trying to make it seem like it's not that big of a deal," freshman UA quarterback Ryan O'Hara said. "That's why he doesn't harp on the whole quarterback issue, because he doesn't want us to harp on it."

To add another variable in the starting quarterback equation, freshman Kris Heavner now vies for the quarterback position as well.

Heavner was put into the Purdue game in the second half. He completed 5-of-12 passes for 55 yards, and accounted for the team's lone score on a 36-yard pass to sophomore receiver Biren Ealy.

Heavner replaced O'Hara after he struggled through the first half, going 7-for-15 with one interception and two fumbles.

Mackovic said he would name a starting quarterback after practice tomorrow for the team's upcoming game against Texas Christian.

"Whatever happens, it will be the best decision for the team," O'Hara said. "I'm not worried about it. All I can do is do my best."
